Founded in 1896 in Ballarat, John Valves started as a small workshop with a clear mission: to provide reliable, high-quality valve solutions for Australian industry. Over the decades, we have grown and adapted, embracing new technologies while remaining rooted in local manufacturing and engineering expertise.
Today, we serve a wide range of industries—from rural installations to large-scale petrochemical operations—delivering durable, cost-effective solutions backed by skilled teams with decades of experience. Proudly part of the Ballarat community since our beginnings, with offices in Delacombe, Perth, and Adelaide, John Valves continues to combine heritage, innovation, and personalised service to meet the needs of customers for generations to come.
Morgan John arrived in Ballarat from Wales in 1860 and, after trying his hand at gold mining, applied his skills in iron and brass founding, eventually starting his own brass founding business in 1896 with three employees. His son, M.W.B. John, joined the business in 1899, helping to expand and grow the company.
As gold mining declined, M.W.B. John, at just 20, focused entirely on valve manufacturing. The business thrived, supplying a wide range of bronze fittings to the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields.
In 1927, the business became a proprietary company and later converted to public status in 1947. By 1955, John Valves had opened a new Creswick Road plant with 536 employees and began an 18-year partnership with Hatfield (Ormskirk) Ltd., one of England’s largest valve manufacturers.
In 1959, John Valves expanded by acquiring several valve manufacturers across Australia, forming the JOHN Group of Companies with offices and warehouses nationwide. In 1976, the group joined the Wormald International Group, extending its influence and reach into overseas markets.
In 2008, John Valves closed its Creswick Road site, and in 2009 the company was acquired by Ballarat’s Australian Valve & Engineering. Today, John Valves continues to grow with locations across Australia, employing over 50 people, and plans for new warehouses and offices in 2027.
